The Most Audacious Project — Dr. Mary Newport

Mary T. Newport, MD is a neonatologist who ran Spring Hill Neonatology in Florida for about 30 years. She trained in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati and in neonatology in Charleston, SC, and graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1978.

Her advocacy began in 2008, when her husband Steve was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s at 51.

She is the author of several books, including “Alzheimer’s Disease: What If There Was a Cure? The Story of Ketones” (2011) and “The Complete Book of Ketones,” and lectures internationally. In 2024 she published an analysis of 288 caregiver case reports in which nearly 90% described improvement in memory, cognition, mood, speech, or physical symptoms. Audacious Nutrition presented her its “Most Audacious Project” award at the Metabolic Health Summit 2022.

A conference travel grant that allowed her to present at the International Space Development Conference (ISDC) 2022, the flagship annual conference of the National Space Society — a nonprofit founded in 1987 (from the merger of the National Space Institute and the L5 Society) that advocates for a spacefaring civilization.

At the event she won the Society’s “Space Settlement in Our Lifetime” Award, which recognizes work advancing the goal of humans living permanently in space.

A California-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, founded by Audra and Justin Wilford after their son Max was diagnosed with a brain tumor, that helps families of children with cancer and other life-threatening conditions.

The Charlie Foundation for Ketogenic Therapies

Founded in 1994 by Hollywood producer/director Jim Abrahams (of “Airplane!” and “The Naked Gun”) and his wife Nancy, after their infant son Charlie’s severe, drug-resistant epilepsy — as many as 100 seizures a day — was brought under control within days by a medically supervised ketogenic diet at Johns Hopkins. Charlie stayed on the diet about five years and remained seizure-free.

The family shared their story on NBC’s “Dateline” in October 1994, and Abrahams wrote, directed, and produced the 1997 TV film “…First Do No Harm,” starring Meryl Streep, which reached an estimated eight million viewers and revived worldwide interest in a therapy that had been largely sidelined since the 1940s.

In 2013 the foundation adopted the name “for Ketogenic Therapies” to reflect uses beyond epilepsy — other neurological disorders and select cancers — and today it funds research and trains clinical dietitians and hospital programs internationally.

Scientific research on ketones

Funding for scientific research on ketones carried out by a neuroscience and epilepsy research group at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest — Hungary’s oldest continuously operating university, founded in 1635.

The group studies how ketone metabolism affects the brain and seizure disorders — the same underlying science on which Audacious Nutrition’s products are built, and a field in which founder Dr. Csilla Ari D’Agostino (who completed her PhD in Hungary in 2008) has long collaborated.

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, founded in 2002 by Keller and Wendy Laros. Its mission is to study manta rays in their natural habitat, conduct scientific research, run public education programs, and promote global manta ray conservation.

The foundation maintains an identification catalog — begun by Keller Laros in 1991 with the first individual, “Lefty” — of the 200-plus Kona reef mantas (hāhālua), each recognized by the unique spot pattern on its underside. After a 2003–2009 campaign it helped drive, Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle signed Act 092 in June 2009, making it illegal to kill or capture manta rays in the state.

The Most Audacious Project Award — Dr. Thomas Seyfried

Thomas N. Seyfried (born 1946) is a professor of biology, genetics, and biochemistry at Boston College, with a PhD in genetics and biochemistry from the University of Illinois and an early faculty post at Yale University School of Medicine. He is one of the best-known proponents of the metabolic — or mitochondrial — theory of cancer.

Building on the century-old work of Otto Warburg, he argues that cancer originates chiefly from damaged cellular energy production rather than nuclear DNA mutation. His 2012 book “Cancer as a Metabolic Disease” and his 2017 “press-pulse” strategy propose managing tumors with sustained metabolic pressure — ketogenic diets, fasting, and glutamine-targeting — combined with intermittent stressors such as hyperbaric oxygen.

The theory is influential in ketogenic-therapy circles but remains outside the mainstream oncology consensus, which treats cancer as predominantly a genetic disease. Audacious Nutrition presented him its “Most Audacious Project” award at the Metabolic Health Summit.
